In several recent “Living Hawaii” stories, Civil Beat deputy editor Eric Pape has explored why salaries in Hawaii are lower than on the mainland.

That prompted the Pod Squad to invite him and Makai Search executive recruiter Doug Harb to talk what can be done to improve incomes.

“Salaries are dictated by the market,” said Harb. “If employers do not have to pay that much more, if they consistently can get the type of candidate that really is going to be productive in their business at the salary that they’re offering, they’ll look and say ‘well, why do I need to pay more?’ ”
