A 36-year-old visitor died Monday after jumping off a 25-foot cliff on the west side of the Big Island, West Hawaii Today reported.
He was identified as William H. Holman of Auburn, Washington.
The newspaper reported that he had jumped off the popular cliff-jumping spot in the morning but struggled to climb back up and was knocked back down by large surf around 11:30 a.m.
Rescue crews eventually found his body around 4 p.m., roughly 30 yards offshore.
Civil Beat published a multi-part series on visitor safety last month, focusing on ocean safety in particular in light of a high rate of visitors drowning. It’s available here.
