If you see a monk seal with an arrow in its flipper, call federal or state wildlife officials.

They are trying to find the seal, which was spotted Sunday by a recreational diver off of Yokohama Beach on the Waianae coast.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration sent out a press release Monday asking for help. The seal is described as about 300 pounds with a 1- to 2-foot arrow or bolt protruding through its hind flipper. The arrow might have a bright orange tail.

Volunteers with the Hawaii Marine Mammal Alliance have been searching the Leeward coast but so far have not found an injured seal, NOAA said.

This seal is a new one for the fisheries experts, who have tagged or marked about 25 to 30 resident monk seal that seem to make Oahu their home. But this seal is not known to the scientists so they would like the public to report any sighting of a monk seal, injured or not. Let them know if there are identifiable markings, flipper tags or injuries.

Here’s who to call:

• For seal sightings, call the alliance hotline — 808-220-7802.

• If you have information on who might have shot this seal or any others, call NOAA’s law enforcement office at 808-725-6133 or the state’s wildlife law enforcement division at 808-587-0077.
