It’s a four-hand race to fill the council seat left vacant by decade-long incumbent Yuki Lei Sugimura, who is running for Maui County mayor.
Four candidates are vying to represent Upcountry Maui residents on the Maui County Council.
The council seat includes the areas of Pukalani, Kula, and ‘Ulupalakua and has been represented since 2016 by Ykui Lei Sugimura who is now a candidate in the Maui County mayor’s race.
All four aspiring council members are running as nonpartisans. They filled out a survey from Civil Beat, outlining their views on a range of issues. Those include food self-sufficiency, the plan to move more of Maui’s water supply into public hands and how Maui County can get out in front of climate change.
They also answered a question from a constituent on the proliferation of speed bumps on Upcountry roads.
Their responses are linked here in alphabetical order under their official ballot name, which you can also compare all in one spot on Civil Beat’s 2026 Hawaiʻi Primary Ballot.
