A ballot full of candidates is running in the primary election to lead Maui Nui.

There are 10 candidates on the ballot for the Aug. 8 primary election to select the final candidates for the Maui County Mayor. The two finalists will face voters in the Hawaiʻi General Election on Nov. 3.

All are running on a nonpartisan platform.

Incumbent Richard Bissen was first elected to the office in 2023 and soon faced the crisis of the Maui wildfires. Since then, Maui Nui has been navigating a range of issues including wildfire recovery, a critical housing shortage and a struggle for control over county water resources.

All of the candidates were sent a survey from Civil Beat, asking them for their views on a range of topics including how the county can assist homeowners with cesspool conversion and how they would tackle the shortage of mental and primary care health providers.

Responses are linked in alphabetical order under their official ballot name, which you can also compare all in one spot on Civil Beat’s 2026 Hawaiʻi Primary Ballot.
