The University of Hawaii’s athletic director previously told Civil Beat that the game was in doubt, underscoring the need for a venue to replace Aloha Stadium

The University of Hawaii’s 2024 football season opener against the Oregon Ducks has been cancelled, according to news reports. Oregon’s move comes as University of Hawaii athletics, especially its football program, are at a crossroads amid shifting conferences and legal changes that allow college athletes to be paid.

The State of Hawaii is stepping up with a plans for a mixed-use development around the site of the dilapidated Aloha Stadium, which includes housing and a new stadium. And UH’s new athletic director, Craig Angelos, is leading a program-wide assessment to determine what it will take for UH programs to remain competitive.

In the meantime, UH is playing its games at Ching Field, a 15,000-seat facility in Manoa.

Over the weekend Action Network reported the game had been cancelled in part so Oregon could schedule a game with its long-time rival, Oregon State. One report also cited having to play the game at Ching Field as another reason.

If we don't do it, who will?

Every election has the potential to shape the future of Hawaiʻi.
