State Rep. Jerry Chang announced today that he plans to retire at the end of his current term because redistricting would have placed him in the same district as incumbent Rep. Mark Nakashima.

Chang had represented South Hilo for the past 24 years. But the new District 1 placed him in a small portion of the old district and an area that includes Hamakua to Waipio Valley.

In a statement, Chang said he has not ruled out running again for public office in the future.
