Mayor Kirk Caldwell will sign Bill 62 into law on Wednesday, banning sitting and lying in four outdoor malls in the downtown business district, according to a press release from the mayor’s office.

The four outdoor pedestrian malls in downtown and Chinatown include Union Mall, Kekaulike Mall, Sun Yat Sen Mall and Fort Street Mall.

The bill is aimed at clearing homeless out of commercial areas where business owners have complained they are urinating and defecating on the sidewalks and scaring away customers. The measure expands upon laws enacted last year that ban sitting and lying in business districts throughout the island and in Waikiki.

Police must issue a warning before issuing a ticket to anyone violating the law.
