Hawaii health officials reported 108 new COVID-19 cases statewide on Thursday and three deaths on Oahu.
Six of the new cases were verified in Hawaii County and one patient was diagnosed out of state, and the rest of the cases were on Oahu.
The Department of Health has recorded 139 COVID-19 related deaths to date, but that does not include many of the deaths reported on Hawaii island. Civil Beat calculates 152 deaths so far, which includes 28 deaths in Hawaii County — 27 of which were associated with an outbreak at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo.
Hawaii continues to deal with coronavirus cases in long term care settings. Another long-term care facility in Hilo called Life Care Center reported Wednesday that 12 residents and five staff members contracted COVID-19, Hawaii News Now reported. On Oahu, 21 residents and six staff members have tested positive for the coronavirus at a Liliha nursing home.
There are 130 people hospitalized with COVID-19, Lt. Gov. Josh Green said Thursday. The state’s intensive care beds are at 70% capacity. The state’s quarantine facilities are at 32% capacity, with 140 individuals in government provided rooms.
In the last seven days, 2.9% of COVID-19 tests statewide have come back positive.
Oahu’s framework for reopening is based on two metrics: the average number of daily cases and the average number of tests that return positive each week — a figure referred to as the positivity rate.
In the last seven days, 3.9% of COVID-19 tests on Oahu returned positive and the island saw an average of 102 new cases reported daily.
The plan has four categories or tiers for reopening. Honolulu is beginning at Tier 1 — the most restrictive tier. To reach Tier 4, the most relaxed tier, the island needs a seven-day average positivity rate of less than 1% and an average of less than 20 daily new cases.
