Pearl City Peninsula residents can again use tap water, the state said, months after fuel leaks contaminated the Navy’s water supply.

City, state and federal leaders are pushing to shut down the World War II-era network of tanks and pipelines.

The helicopter was operated by a military contractor participating in a training operation.

Residents of a small area near the Navy’s Red Hill fuel facility may resume using their water for all purposes, effective immediately, the DOH said.

The system would deploy water automatically in case of a fire at the Navy’s fuel facility, but firefighting foam would have to be turned on manually, a spokeswoman said.

For years, Hawaii’s congressional delegation was not in favor of decommissioning the Red Hill fuel facility. That changed when fuel hit people’s faucets.

It’s not the first time the Marine Corps has released wastewater into Kailua Bay in violation of its permit.

The lawmakers told the Navy secretary to “repair your damaged military assets and your damaged relationship with the state of Hawaii.”

Security footage of the leaks that contaminated military families’ drinking water “doesn’t exist,” the congressman said.

As the federal government fights the state’s shutdown order in court, city and state lawmakers are making moves to close the facility through legislation.
