The Department of Health’s director declined to say whether the state is willing to get into a legal fight with the Navy over Gov. Ige’s order to stop operating tanks suspected of contaminating drinking water.

The hotel industry is once again providing emergency shelter, this time for families who need clean water.

A 2018 study found that building a new jet fuel facility to replace the aging tanks at Red Hill could cost as much as $10 billion and could take until 2051.

Earlier on Monday, the Navy secretary said he had no immediate plans to defuel Red Hill.

Test samples had to be sent to the mainland, leaving the community without answers for days.

The statement by Gov. David Ige and the entire congressional delegation comes amid a water contamination crisis and calls to shut the facility down permanently.

The military also stepped up efforts to help affected families by providing temporary lodging assistance that will enable those eligible to move into hotels.

The Navy and the state Health Department are struggling to get details about the contamination of a water well serving Pearl Harbor.

The city’s water is still safe to drink, but the measure is a precaution because the Halawa shaft draws from the same aquifer, officials said.
