The state Department of Health said it had just received the Navy’s test results and it stood by its recommendations on water usage.

The Hawaii congressman pressed a top official with the U.S. Navy for answers during a House Armed Services Committee hearing.

Civilian water customers get their water from the same aquifer as the military families who have complained of contaminated water. 

It’s still unclear what kind of petroleum was present and where it came from.

The Navy is investigating whether a 14,000-gallon fuel and water leak on Nov. 20 is related to a 1,600-gallon fuel release in May.

UPDATED: DOH advised residents not to use the water near Pearl Harbor after area families said they’re being sickened by possible water contamination.

There was no indication of a threat to the environment, and drinking water in the area remains potable, the Navy said.

A naval officer told the state health department that there are corrosion issues, including “holes in tanks,” that are being hidden from regulators.

Hawaii’s senators and congressmen are turning up the heat on the Navy after military officials waited months to report evidence of a pipeline leak to state regulators.

The federal lawmakers’ letter comes as some constituents call for the shutdown of the Navy’s underground fuel facility.
