As the Navy works to clean up the mess, pressure is building to shut down the Red Hill facility permanently.

Some city and state lawmakers are not counting on the health department order to protect Oahu’s drinking water.

The governor wants to see proof the Navy can operate the fuel tanks safely but says he'll consider issuing the facility a new permit.

Results from a groundwater monitoring well near the tanks showed levels of contamination in October and November that exceed state limits.

The bill is the first state legislative effort to shut down the Red Hill fuel facility since the Navy poisoned the water supply of 93,000 people.

The water contamination crisis has upended people's lives physically, emotionally and financially.

The company will conduct one of several investigations into the facility that leaked fuel into military families' drinking water.

The Navy continues to flush petroleum-tainted water from homes and neighborhoods, with most residents expected to be able to return starting later this month.

Navy officials didn't know about the pipeline until someone reviewed the facility's schematics from 1941, lawmakers who took a tour said they were told.  

Employees at Red Hill filed complaints about safety hazards before the leaks in 2021, a Navy official said.
