The University of Hawaii’s Board of Regents will discuss ways to reduce operating expenses and a letter asking Gov. David Ige to halt pay raises at its meeting Thursday.

COVID-19 is prompting the University of Hawaii to reduce some of its teaching programs, including a foundational course in human dissection.

The Hawaii Keiki program to expand school-based health options for students started a health hotline after schools closed because of the pandemic.

The university is working closely with state health officials to keep students safe, but said coronavirus cases on campus were “almost inevitable.”

The extent of financial woes won’t be clear for another eight weeks when fall classes start and enrollment numbers are in.

About 750 students still live on campus at the University of Hawaii Manoa. But most are being told to move out by May 16 even as the stay-at-home order makes it hard to find housing.

The university is still working on what those classes will look like.

Many in the 2020 graduating class had big plans to go away to college on the mainland. But the prospect of online-only classes and living far from home is changing their minds.
