The city had taken the Lindani Myeni civil case to trial after Honolulu police officers strongly opposed a settlement.

Benjamin Moralez, 48, fired multiple rounds from his hotel room and refused to drop his weapon as he approached officers in a hallway, prosecutors said.

The county prosecutor also plans to review a fatal police shooting Sunday at the Keʻehi Boat Harbor. He spoke just hours before another police-involved shooting at Mākaha.

Honolulu police said they stepped up traffic enforcement on the Westside last summer to help them find criminals and guns. Some residents said they felt harassed. 

The mayor’s office is also looking for a new candidate for an opening on the police commission after Blangiardi’s previous nominee dropped out this week.

Big Island Police Chief Ben Moszkowicz may take over as interim chief, if the police commission agrees.

The City Council will consider a resolution aimed at reducing vacancies and encouraging more hires and fewer retirements.

The Honolulu Police Commission has been long-criticized and often targeted for significant reform. Several proposals are in the works for voters to consider next election.

A turf war is brewing between a new police standards board and legislators, who are frustrated with the lack of progress.

Prosecutors said officers tried to de-escalate the situation and use non-lethal force before shooting Brandan Maroney.
